Ron Carey and Teamster Power at Local 804
Ron Carey talks about UPS, his personal journey from the package car to the Local 804 presidency to his election as Teamsters General President in 1991 in the first one-member, one-vote election in Teamster history-and the 1997 UPS strike.
Ron Carey talks about the 2006 Teamsters Election and how Local 804 members have stayed loyal to reform even though the Local 804 Executive Board has flip-flopped and backed Hoffa.
In 1997, Ron Carey stepped down as Teamster General President after an illegal fundraising scheme by his campaign aides was revealed. Carey was later barred from the union even though he was never charged with having any role in the scheme. Retired Newsday report Ken Crowe reports on Carey’s vindication in federal court.
This chapter on Ron Carey’s honest, militant leadership during the worst days of Teamster corruption helped catapult Carey to national prominence as a reform leader in our union.
